Amblyopia

Strabismic, anisometropic, deprivation.

  • Correct refractive error first — glasses alone improve many children (PEDIG).
  • Patching 2 h/day as effective as 6 h for moderate amblyopia; atropine 1% penalization comparable to patching.
  • Deprivation (cataract, ptosis) is most urgent — dense congenital cataract surgery by 6–8 weeks.
  • Treatment is most effective before age 7 but benefit is possible into adolescence.
